What does VSOP mean on a bottle of brandy?
→ VS stands for Very Special, and it means Cognac was aged at least two years. → VSOP stands for Very Special Old Pale - aged at least four years. → XO or Napoleon means Extra Old - aged at least six years.
VSOP stands for “Very Superior Old Pale”: VSOP cognacs are created from eaux-de-vie aged for at least four years. The VSOP category includes designations such as “Old” or “Reserve”. XO stands for “Extra Old”: XO cognacs are made only from eaux-de-vie at least six years old.
Very Superior Old Pale (VSOP) refers to cognacs that have been aged for at least four years. "Old" and "Reserve" are examples of VSOP classifications. Extra Old (XO) cognacs are manufactured from Eaux-de-vie that have been aged for at least six years.
The designations you see on Cognac labels—VS (Very Special), VSOP (Very Superior Old Pale) and XO (Extra Old)—are a guarantee of how long a Cognac has been aged. VS indicates that the Cognac has been aged at least two years, VSOP at least four years and XO (Extra Old) at least six years.
Grades of Armagnac:
VSOP (Very Superior Old Pale): The youngest brandy must have aged at least four years, although in practice, most brandies at this class are usually much older. Napoléon, XO (Extra Old): More than six years on oak. Hors d'age: More than 10 years.
As previously mentioned, brandy is distilled fruit juice, and it can be any kind of fruit juice, while cognac is a specific type of distilled fruit juice with lots of qualifications. Cognac comes from the Cognac region of southwestern France, and is made with a fruit juice base of white grapes.
Contrary to popular confusion, Hennessy is not a whiskey but is instead a type of brandy. The term brandy refers to a spirit distilled from a fermented fruit juice, be it grape or other fruits such as apple (used to make apple brandies like Calvados).
XO (Extra Old) or Napoléon currently designates a blend in which the youngest brandy is stored for at least six years.
Armagnac is the oldest brandy (and liquor) recorded to be still distilled in the world. In 1310, Prior Vital du Four, a cardinal, wrote of its 40 virtues.
While Courvoisier is slightly more affordable, it doesn't really lag in quality. In fact, it's your better choice if you prefer a sweeter cognac to be slightly sweeter. Meanwhile, if you prefer to splurge and go for luxury, Hennessy is your better alternative.
Why is Hennessy so special?
Matured in new oak barrels, Hennessy V.S is bold and fragrant. Its beguiling character is uniquely Hennessy, a timeless choice with an intensity all its own. Hennessy V.S offers toasted and fruit notes, with a rich, clearly defined palate and a welcoming exuberance.
But generally XO Brandy will be of higher quality than the VSOP. When referring to Cognac or Armagnac these terms refer to minimum legal aging requirements in oak barrel. For example, a Cognac labelled VS must have a minimum two years aging, while VSOP is four years and XO is six.

A Costco Cognac may not seem like the most glamorous choice for a connoisseur, but the Kirkland Signature XO Fine Cognac is a unique and pleasant XO that has surprised drinkers around the world with its delicate yet standout flavor profile and pleasing price tag when compared to others of its age.
- Neat - Drinking brandy neat means that it is enjoyed straight, without ice or any additional mixers.
- On the Rocks - Drinking brandy on the rocks means that the liquor is served with ice.
- In Cocktails - Brandy can be paired with mixers and syrups to create a variety of brandy cocktails.
Which is the smoothest brandy? The smoothest brandy is Martell XO. It's a very sophisticated cognac with a smooth silky texture and a long finish. Enjoy it for a wonderful drinking experience, with notes of rancio, citrus, blossom, and walnut when tasting and an aroma of black pepper, fig, almond, and sandalwood.
Brandy was used as medicine for centuries. However, modern doctors don't suggest it as a cure-all anymore — because it doesn't. Some brandies may share the benefits of red wine. But, like alcohol consumption in general, drinking brandy in excess can quickly become a health problem that far outweighs any benefits.
Korbel is a good budget-friendly brandy that is excellent for cocktails and mixed drinks, and the brand's older expressions are great sipping brandies.
Leading brandy & cognac brands in the U.S. 2021, based on volume sales. This statistic illustrates the leading brandy and cognac brands in the United States in 2021, based on volume sales. In that year, Hennessy was the leading brandy and cognac brand in the United States with about 4.7 million 9 liter cases sold.
Which is stronger? Different brands of Bourbon and Brandy have different ABV, however, on average brandy has a slightly stronger ABV.
BRANDY OF THE YEAR 2022 goes to Italy's Grappa Riserva Invecchiata in Botti da Whiskey by Distilleria Sibona Spa with 93 points and a Gold Medal.
Is Grand Marnier a brandy?
The brand's best-known product is Grand Marnier Cordon Rouge, an orange-flavored liqueur created in 1880 by Alexandre Marnier-Lapostolle. It is made from a blend of Cognac brandy, distilled essence of bitter orange, and sugar, containing 40% alcohol (70 proof in the UK, 80 proof in the US).
Grand Marnier is a sophisticated blend of cognac and exotic bitter orange.

However, there is a significant difference between brandy vs whiskey. Brandy has an ABV (alcohol by volume) of less than 40 percent. Whiskey has an ABV of more than 40 percent. In other words, brandy is not whiskey.
In popular culture
Hennessy has a long-standing relationship with African American culture, especially hip hop. It has been described as "synonymous with rap music and African Americans, who are the brand's major consumers and advocates".
In the late 1990s as hip hop began to truly go global via MTV, cognac and Hennessy in particular started to be referenced by rappers. It was dropped into tracks as a reference point for old-world luxury, enjoying the finer things in life and sharing a good time.
The sweetness of the cola alog with the oak, vanilla and caramel notes of the Hennessy make for an enjoyable drink. This classic combination has been around for decades, making it one of the most popular cocktails. It's easy to make too – simply pour equal parts Hennessy and Coke into a glass filled with ice.
Once a bottle of brandy is opened, it's got about 1 to 2 years left before noticeable degradation in flavor and quality.
Victor Hugo called cognac the "liquor of the gods." It's become known as a symbol of French luxury, the best brandy money can buy—because, yes, cognac is a brandy. But just as not all wine is champagne, there are plenty of details that set cognac apart from other types of brandy.
VS stands for “Very Special”: only eaux-de-vie at least two years old can be used to make a VS cognac. Other denominators and expressions are permitted, such as “3 stars” or “luxury”, and as such are included in the VS cognac category.
Brandy is an alcoholic beverage said to be originated in Spain by the vintners in the 15th or 16th century. It is generally considered as a late evening or an after-dinner drink and is prepared from a fruit-based mash.
Do you take brandy with hot water or cold water?
It Can Aid in Cold or Flu
When you're suffering from the flu, it is natural to drink warm water during cold weather. But you can combine it with brandy as well. A soothing brandy with hot water may provide much-needed comfort. Its antimicrobial qualities aid in the treatment of throat irritation and other infections.
On the spot where the buffalo migration route crossed the Kentucky River, we've been making legendary bourbon whiskey for over 200 years. Buffalo Trace is the oldest continuously operating distillery in America.
Again, it all comes down to personal preference. If a cognac has been aged for longer, it does not necessarily mean it is better. Younger cognacs, such as a VS, tend to have a fresher, livelier aromas of fruit, where as older eaux-de-vie such as VSOPs tend to be smoother, with clear notes of oak and spices.
As previously mentioned, brandy is distilled fruit juice, and it can be any kind of fruit juice, while cognac is a specific type of distilled fruit juice with lots of qualifications. Cognac comes from the Cognac region of southwestern France, and is made with a fruit juice base of white grapes.
The VSOP category includes designations such as “Old” or “Reserve”. XO stands for “Extra Old”: XO cognacs are made only from eaux-de-vie at least six years old.
