Do I need to call my bank before I leave the country?
Notifying your credit card company and bank before a trip can help ensure the institutions won't freeze your cards while you are traveling due to suspicious activity.
Yes. Cards issued by U.S. Bank can be used in most foreign countries for transactions. If you're planning to travel and want to use your card, let us know. Call us at the number on the back of your card, or add a travel note to your account digitally.
The main advantage of using a debit or credit card overseas is that you won't pay foreign transaction fees every time you spend. While many also won't charge fees for cash withdrawals, you will still usually be charged interest from the date of the transaction if you use a credit card.
You may be charged for using your debit or credit card abroad to buy something or when you withdraw cash in a foreign currency. What you'll pay depends on the transaction you make and the card you use. You can also compare EEA currency conversion charges while travelling.
- Open the Menu icon in the upper left corner, then select Manage cards.
- Select the card you'll be traveling with, then Travel notification at the bottom of the screen.
- Select Add trip, or if there's a previously entered notification you want to modify, select Update trip or Delete trip.
The best U.S. Bank credit cards with no foreign transaction fee are the U.S. Bank Altitude Reserve Visa Infinite® Card and the U.S. Bank Altitude Connect. In addition to their 0% foreign fees, these U.S. Bank cards are good for international travel because they offer great ongoing rewards rates.
Yes, anywhere Visa is accepted. Visa fees will apply, and it will show on your statement as an international 1% transaction service fee.
- Chase – fee-free spending & withdrawals + 1% cashback.
- Starling – fee-free spending & cash withdrawals.
- Virgin Money – fee-free spending & withdrawals.
- Currensea – links to your existing bank account.
These fees can be avoided by choosing a bank account that doesn't charge fees and reimburses out-of-network ATM fees and by always withdrawing local currency from ATMs. Account holders can also ask their home bank if there are partner branches or in-network ATMs in the destination country or countries.
Withdrawing cash on a specialist overseas credit card when you're on holiday overseas can actually be a good MoneySaving thing to do, as it's often a cheap way to get cash. But you shouldn't just withdraw cash overseas on any credit card – most will charge you a fortune for it.
Should I let my bank know I'm traveling?
You're not required to notify your credit card company when you're going away on vacation, but it is highly recommended. By letting your credit card company know where you're going and for how long, your company will know that any card transactions from that location were likely authorized by you.
So, how should you pay for things abroad? A combination of a specialist credit card, plus a prepaid card and/or cash is the best option to minimise fees, get the best exchange rate, be protected and still have cash available for small purchases.
We recommend withdrawing cash from ATMs as the cheapest way to get cash abroad if you're using a debit or credit card that's specifically geared toward international use or a travel card.
There is a $10 exchange fee for transactions equal to or less than $250 U.S. dollars. That fee will be waived for transactions greater than $250 U.S. Dollars.
If you are traveling outside of the United States, charges may have a foreign fee up to 3% of the transaction amount. For specific information related to foreign transaction fees, please refer to your cardmember agreement.
Note that international usage is only provided on Visa and MasterCard debit cards. If you have a RuPay Card, you can ask your bank to provide a Visa or MasterCard debit card. You may also set or modify daily international usage limits under the card tab through the net banking platform.
- Charles Schwab Bank: Best for using ATMs.
- Capital One 360: Best on foreign transaction fees.
- HSBC Bank: Best for expats with high balances.
- Citibank: Best for wiring money.
- Revolut: Best for nonbank multicurrency account.
