Do you have to pay to use your phone internationally?
Roaming rates for the countries you plan to visit.
For most U.S. customers, domestic service plans do not cover usage abroad. Rates may be much higher because of additional roaming fees on foreign mobile networks and may vary from country to country and network to network.
Utilize a Temporary International Travel Plan
International travel plans allow you to utilize your phone's apps, texting, maps, and other online features without having to pay for roaming rates. An international plan is a service that lets you use your phone in other countries.
Only use Wi-Fi
One of the simplest ways to avoid paying international fees is to keep your phone in Airplane mode unless you're in a place with Wi-Fi. This is a great option for anyone willing to go a few hours a day without using their phone's data.
- Pay the international fee on your regular plan so it will work (usually) as soon as you get off the plane.
- Forego using the phone part of your smartphone and just use Wifi to connect.
- Buy a SIM card when you arrive at your destination.
Customers are only charged for receiving messages overseas if they are outside of the country in which they have their phone contract, i.e. they are 'roaming'.
While each carrier will offer different international roaming rates, you can almost always expect to pay more for consuming data outside the country. These additional fees means that you need to be conscious of how your are being billed while overseas.
- Put your phone in airplane mode. Only use it (besides features such as the camera) when you can connect to Wi-Fi. ...
- Get an international plan. Every phone carrier offers its customers international plans, which vary. ...
- Buy a prepaid SIM card.
How to text an international number? You can send an international SMS to a phone by using your carrier data roaming plan. The cost varies from one carrier to another. You are charged twice, when you send and when you receive international messages, so take that into account when you send texts the “old-school” way.
- In the Settings app, tap Cellular, or Cellular Data, or Mobile Data.
- Turn on Cellular Data, then tap Cellular Data Options.
- Turn off Data Roaming. 1,2
Buy a Local SIM Card
One of the most affordable ways to stay connected while traveling is to bring your phone and buy a prepaid SIM card at your destination. A SIM card is the tiny removable card in your phone that stores information about your mobile identity, such as your number and wireless services.
How do I avoid international fees on my iPhone?
Turn off Data Roaming or prepare for a trip. Need to avoid roaming charges because you arrived at your destination without an international data plan? Check your Cellular Data options and turn off Data Roaming. In the Settings app, tap Cellular, or Cellular Data, or Mobile Data.
WiFi calls international numbers are billed at International Long Distance rates. Calls to 411 and other premium numbers are billed separately.
The answer is yes! FaceTime is free whether you or the other person is outside the country. You can make international FaceTime calls and they are free as long as you have internet connectivity. But make sure to connect your iPhone to a Wi-Fi network.
